The ENACT Doctoral Landscape Award is funded by UKRI’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) [Grant reference: EP/Z535242/1].
The DLA is committed to creating globally competitive researchers capable of thriving in interdisciplinary, collaborative, and challenge-led environments. Our enthusiastic and talented students are on a 3.5-year PhD programme in a vibrant and research-intensive environment.

Research themes
The DLA focuses on three interconnected themes
Environmental Monitoring and Sustainability
Addressing urgent global challenges by advancing techniques for environmental sensing and sustainable practices
Data-economic Machine Learning and AI
Pushing the boundaries of AI efficiency and applicability, addressing the ever-increasing energy and data needs of machine learning, focusing on “data-economic” solutions
Energy Systems and Materials Innovation
Responding to the pressing need for sustainable energy solutions and advanced materials
How will the DLA make a difference?
We will train researchers capable of working across disciplinary boundaries, particularly at the nexus of environmental science, AI, and energy innovation.
We will deliver positive societal and economic impacts through research addressing pressing issues such as climate change, energy security, and sustainable resource management.
The Programme
All DLA students conduct a 3.5 year PhD at the University of Lincoln.
Our DLA programme is built around the individual needs and aspirations of each student, addressing our objective to train researchers capable of working across disciplinary boundaries.
All projects are co-created with an external stakeholder, who will also form part of the project’s supervisory team. This approach ensures;
- Real-world relevance – Projects align with industry needs and challenges, delivering positive societal impact.
- Collaborative supervision – External partners provide close advisership for students.
- Enhanced employability – Students gain exposure to potential future employers.
Students will benefit from an ongoing, integrated, research training programme, including access to the University of Lincoln’s Research Development Programme, which provides a wealth of training, covering topics such as:
- In-depth Subject Knowledge: Advanced modules, research seminars, and annual summer schools.
- Research Methodologies: Comprehensive training in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific writing.
- Wider Skills Development: Training in responsible research and innovation, ethics, reproducibility, and open science practices.
Key features and benefits of the programme
- Fully funded studentship covering tuition fees, maintenance, and funding for travel and consumables
- Supervision by academic experts
- Working with external stakeholders
- Excellent training opportunities
- Opportunities for group project work to encourage publishable, multi-disciplinary projects and develop team-working skills
